Here's an excellent question on transportation:
Hey! I just wanted to know about the transportation options available to and from the campus? For weekend trips, and so on... I've heard that driving down would be the best option. But are there any other alternatives, like trains? :)
Answers: There are the local buses called CATA Bus that operate in the University Park campus and the greater State College area. If you plan to go to places like Philadephia, New York City or Washington D.C you could take buses (e.g Greyhound Buses) which departs from a bus terminal located next to the campus. As for trains, the nearest train station is located in Lewistown, PA about 45 minutes away by car.

CATA buses are a great way to travel locally. Bus fares are $1.25 one way. To check out the bus routes around State College visit: http://www.catabus.com/
If you want to travel around campus, there are FREE CATA buses. These buses are either called "LOOP" or "LINK". The loops and links tend to get very crowded throughout the day especially if it's rainy or snowy, but they are a handy way to get around.
Bikes are another alternative to getting around campus, but make sure you register them with the univerisity or they will be confiscated!
In terms of getting out of town, last year Penn State started the "Big Apple Express" bus service to New York City. While it's finished for the summer, I hope it resumes for fall(http://www.transportation.psu.edu/psu2nyc/).
Finally, International Student Services offers day trips throughout the semester through the Explorers program. In the past, we've taken trips to New York, Philadelphia, Atlantic City, etc...
Hey! Thank you so much! :)
i was not sure where to leave my question, so here i go: i would like to get a drivers' license in the US. How does this work out ? Is there a learning center in State College ?
Thanks
